Reader-copy applications

Starting October 8, 2026, new consent to review reminders and invitations also covers future book applications submitted with the same email address in the same site edition, until you withdraw it. Earlier consent is not automatically extended. You can stop reminders for individual books separately. Leaving the box unchecked on a later application does not withdraw consent you previously gave. To withdraw it, use the link in our reader emails or on your book access page.

You can apply without an account. We store your first name, email address, selected book, short response, application status, and the times of application, email confirmation, decision, access provision, and completion. We also record the administrator who made the decision and any internal note. Submitted campaign parameters and the entry point help us understand where an application came from. A newsletter signup does not verify an account or approve a reader copy.

You receive necessary messages about the decision and book access. No separate confirmation of your application is required. We provide a reader copy only after personally approving your application. Messages are sent through Brevo. Personal confirmation and access links are valid for seven days and can be requested again. A necessary HttpOnly cookie in the application area remembers the access key for up to seven days. Authorization is checked again for every download. If you later sign in with the same verified email address, your applications also appear in your account.

Only with your separate consent do we send reminders about optional, honest Amazon reviews or invitations to try more books. We record your choice, time, consent wording and version, withdrawal, and delivery status. The current flow schedules one reminder 14 days after the first download. It is canceled if the reader-copy process is completed or consent is withdrawn. The unsubscribe link in follow-up emails stops these messages for your existing applications in that market. Approved PDFs remain available. We do not infer new consent from a previous newsletter or reminder choice. The legal basis for optional follow-up emails is consent (GDPR Article 6(1)(a)). Puzzle Post remains separate.

We process applications and supporting records to handle your request and manage the book access you requested (GDPR Article 6(1)(b)). The internal reader overview links book applications, decisions, PDF access, and voluntary feedback to your email address. Reported reviews are self-reported, not verified Amazon reviews. This personal overview is separate from anonymously aggregated counters and accessible only to administrators. We need the link between address, book, and approval for the duration of your requested book access. Further retention depends on any unresolved request and separately justified recordkeeping needs; data no longer needed must be deleted. Archiving in the admin view is not deletion. You can request access, correction, or deletion using the contact address above.

Optional puzzle statistics

Only if you allow puzzle statistics in Cookie settings does your browser report the start of an interactive book puzzle at your first actual change to the plan or first opened hint, a successfully checked solution, and further hints opened. A page view alone is not a puzzle start. Reports are immediately aggregated into daily and hourly totals with book, fixed source, action and count; historical advertising access remains separately identified in these totals. No visitor ID, email address, placements, IP address or device profile is stored. A puzzle session does not identify a unique person; reopening or restarting may create a new session. Transmission and technical processing rely on your voluntary consent (GDPR Article 6(1)(a), Austrian TKG 2021 Section 165(3)). You can use the book puzzles unchanged without consenting.

You can allow puzzle statistics and Meta ad measurement independently in the combined cookie banner. “Accept” enables both purposes; “Reject” enables neither. Under “Customize”, you can choose each purpose individually and save your choices. Your decision applies to all book puzzles and language editions in the same browser profile. We store the selected purposes, version and decision time for up to 180 days under puzzzle-consent-v2; the previous keys puzzzle-game-statistics-consent-v1 and puzzzle-marketing-consent-v1 remain for compatibility. No unique visitor identifier is included. Earlier consent is not extended to additional purposes. To withdraw, open “Cookie settings” below, disable the relevant purpose and select “Save choices”. Anonymous aggregated counters are retained for approximately 400 days. Withdrawal stops future reports; individual contributions cannot be removed from the anonymous totals.

Optional advertising measurement with Meta

After you give fresh, explicit permission for Meta advertising measurement, we also send successful reader-copy applications through our server (Meta Conversions API). Without that permission, we do not send a server conversion. We use an event ID to prevent duplicate counting, the time, the public application page without query parameters, the book ID, browser details, connection IP address and existing _fbp/_fbc IDs. We do not send names, email addresses, answers or personal access links. To record your permission and support withdrawal, we store a random, internal-only ID in a protected __Host-puzzzle_marketing cookie for up to 180 days, together with the decision version and time. Earlier Pixel permissions do not automatically enable server transmission.

Matching data for retries stays in a protected queue until acceptance, withdrawal or the end of the 24-hour sending window and is removed on the next processing run; a technical outage can delay cleanup. Technical status records remain for up to 30 days until the next cleanup. Withdrawing permission in Cookie settings immediately stops new browser events and, once received by our server, cancels queued transmissions. It cannot recall events already sent or in transit. If you are offline, server withdrawal is attempted again on your next page visit.

Only with your consent do we load the Meta Pixel from Meta Platforms Ireland Limited, Merrion Road, Dublin 4, D04 X2K5, Ireland. It helps us measure whether Facebook and Instagram ads lead to page views, reader-copy requests, downloads, confirmed Puzzle Post signups, or puzzle actions, so we can evaluate and improve ads. A request is not a confirmed download. Meta receives technical connection data, including IP address and browser information, the public page visited, cookie identifiers, and the action with a book or case identifier. We do not send email addresses, sign-in codes, or personal download keys as event data; automatic advanced matching and automatic event detection are not enabled.

Meta may link the data to a Facebook or Instagram account and may process it in the United States. Information about recipients, retention, and international transfers is available in Meta's Privacy Policy. The legal basis is your voluntary consent (GDPR Article 6(1)(a) and Austrian TKG 2021 Section 165(3)). Collection and transmission are covered by the Joint controller agreement with Meta.

The marketing cookies _fbp and, where present, _fbc help associate visits with advertising clicks and usually last up to 90 days. We retain your choice without an individual identifier for up to 180 days under puzzzle-marketing-consent-v1. You can reject or withdraw consent at any time through “Cookie settings” in the footer. This stops new Pixel events and removes accessible Meta cookies on our domain. It does not automatically delete data already transmitted. Interactive book puzzles, book bonuses and downloads remain available without consent. Puzzle Post and review reminders require separate consent. Puzzle statistics and advertising measurement each have their own choice in the cookie banner.

German and US editions

The German website and US edition under /en-us/ keep newsletter choices, reader-copy applications, approvals and reminders separate. Signing up in one edition does not automatically sign you up in another. The standard unsubscribe link in Brevo newsletters stops newsletter emails in both languages. Your reader account and cookie choices apply across the website; local puzzle progress and usage totals are separated by edition. Statistics record the edition used, not your residence or nationality.

Optional consent for future reader copies

If you explicitly consent on our confirmation page, we store your email address, the time, and the wording and version of your consent for future book applications. Opening the invitation alone does not give consent. We record when an invitation is sent and confirmed to avoid sending duplicates. Your preference appears in our protected contact and book administration. Withdrawing consent ends this general preference; you can also stop reminders for individual books. The invitation does not automatically extend earlier consent for a specific book. Puzzle Post remains a separate choice.
